The butterflies are very popular for the Miramichi River system. This years W. W. Doak catalog has 8 variations of the butterfly. I noticed that the versions of these flies, in W. W. Doaks catalog, have a small oval silver tag on them. The original pattern does not call for any tag at all. Given the reputation of W. W. Doak, and Jerry Doak in particular makes me think that the little tag may add that little something extra to the fly. The pictures above show some of the more favored color combinations for this pattern. Click on any picture to see a bigger version. Use the patterns below and put in the colors you like. I have also ommitted the Doak's tag but feel free to tie it in on your pattern.

The wing should sweep back at about a 45 degree angle. The original pattern called for goat hair. Most folks use white calf tail for the wing. I prefer calf body hair as it is not as stiff as the tail and adds a little more action to the fly when fished wet.
The collar calls for one turn in front and one turn behind the wing. Most folks tie two turns in front of the wing. I do not know if it makes much difference for fish but I like to tie flies from their original patterns.
